Unde is a member of the Kaili language complex along with Ledo, Da’a and Baras.
The Unde homeland is the triangular peninsula which separates the Palu Bay from the Makassar Strait.
Unde Kaili comprises two dialects: Lole, in which unde is the local word for ‘no,’ spoken on the eastern half of the peninsula (that is, nearest Palu Bay); and Ganti, in which ndepuu is the word for ‘no,’ spoken to the west of Lole.
Donna Evans, who has worked for over two decades in the closely related Kaili Ledo language, estimates there may be 25,000 speakers of Kaili Unde (2004:pers.comm.)
Because of vigorous language use throughout the Kaili area, including Unde, we rate Kaili Unde as 5/Safe. This assessment needs to be verified.

There are definitely some Unde people who want to promote their language. It remains to be seen, however, whether they will succeed in distinguishing their particular ‘Unde’ brand in a general pro-‘Kaili’ movement.
