Location and Dialects
Campalagian is spoken along the coast of the Gulf of Mandar. It comprises two dialects centered respectively around the towns of Campalagian and Buku. For the location of Campalagian and Buku, see among others the sketch map in Strømme and Valkama (1987:84).
Classification
In previous studies Campalagian had been classified as a dialect of Mandar (Adriani and Kruyt 1914:155) and of Bugis (Muthalib 1973; Pelenkahu, Muthalib and Pattiasina 1974), but following the work of Grimes and Grimes (1987:32–33) and Friberg and Friberg (1988:306) it is today regarded as a separate language.
While Friberg and Laskowske (1989:5) placed Campalagian in the Bugis subfamily, they noted that apparent similarities may be the result of convergence and suggested an historical-comparative investigation to determine Campalagian’s deeper affinities.
Population
Based on 1983 demographic data, the number of Campalagian speakers was estimated at 30,000 (Strømme and Valkama 1987:86).
